How to Find Strength in Yourself

How to Find Strength in Yourself

Do you ever find yourself relying on something or someone else for your happiness? Us too. It seems like we have all been there. Sometimes when you are deep in those feelings it seems nearly impossible to get past them.

However, it is most definitely NOT impossible. It’s incredibly important to do little things every day to help you find your inner strength.

Here are my top tips on how to locate and grow your personal strength:

1. Words of Affirmation

Daily words of affirmation can be extremely beneficial to your self-esteem. More recently, I have started every single morning by reminding myself of what I am. The first time I look in the mirror for the day, I tell myself that I am strong, I am confident, I am enough, etc.

When I first started doing this, I thought it was a little dumb and unbelievably cheesy. I was unconvinced that saying these silly little sentences would actually shape my opinion of myself. Nonetheless, I continued to speak these words into existence. Slowly, I did start to see a difference in my behavior.

I no longer felt my self-deprecating remarks creeping in every time that I caught a glimpse of myself in a reflective surface. Additionally, I started to value my thoughts and opinions more. It’s definitely not to say that I am infinitely more confident, but I do believe this type of self-love is a simple but effective addition to your daily routine.

2. Reflect on Your Past

Think about where you are in your life right now. How did you get here? It wasn’t solely by luck or fate. Maybe you know exactly what led you to this point, or maybe it’s currently a little unclear. Both of those answers are perfectly acceptable.

Regardless, we have all been through tough situations, some tougher than others. However, you are here now. You have made it past those painful obstacles. You have done hard things before and there is no reason that you cannot overcome more. By reflecting on this sentiment, I think it is truly empowering.

Through reflection of your past, you can recognize the existence of your inner strength. Even if that strength seems far away right now, that does not mean you can’t get it back. You are more than capable of handling grim situations. And if you don’t believe me, look at everything that has been stacked up against you before -- and you’re still here.

3. Set Goals!

Personally, I love being able to write things down and cross them out once I’ve accomplished them. If you’re like me, you probably get a thrill out of setting goals, both short-term and long-term. If what I am saying sounds absolutely foreign to you, don’t worry. Setting goals is easy!

Since we already thought about where we are right now and how we got there, now it’s time to think about where we want to go. Where do you see yourself in six months? What about in six years? I know this exercise can seem incredibly daunting, but it will help you and your personal growth.

By recognizing what you want, you can work on yourself to get there. Keep in mind that not every goal you set has to be as bold as ending world hunger. Instead, you should set goals that keep you focused and driven. This will allow you to not only achieve tangible things, but it will help you to realize how strong you actually are.

These three tasks, despite how unassuming they might seem, will help you to expand upon your inner strength. Be sure to let us know in the comments which of these works best for you, or if you have any of your own tips on building personal strength!
